Police constable Daniel McInnes said an 88-year-old women and her 95-year-old blind husband were waiting to see a doctor at Palmerston North Hospital's emergency department yesterday when a drunk man struck up a conversation with them.

The woman gave him $3 to buy a pie, Mr McInnes said. The couple then left to get treatment elsewhere because of their long wait.

The robber was described as being a Pacific Islander or dark- skinned Maori in his 20s or 30s, with "distinctive" shoulder-length curly hair. "I was just a bit gobsmacked - it's despicable really . . . it makes you sick," Mr McInnes said. The elderly couple's daughter Heather, who did not want her

"It's quite sad that people target really elderly people in this fashion."

She said the robber may have noticed all the money her mother was carrying when she had opened her purse to give him money. "[My parents] tend to think the best of people rather than the worst."
